Buying a Used Catering Trailer: The 12-Point Check Before You Hand Over Cash

Why This Matters Before You Buy

A catering trailer is not a piece of equipment. It is a kitchen, a vehicle and a business all bolted together, and every one of those three parts can cost you money after the sale.

Most people buying a used catering trailer in the UK are buying on price and photos. Then the gas certificate turns out to be three years expired, the generator will not carry the fryer and the griddle at the same time, and the whole thing needs two grand of work before it can trade a single service.

None of that is hidden malice from the seller. Most sellers simply do not know what a buyer needs to see, because nobody ever asked them for it properly. So ask properly. Here is what to check, in the order that matters.

Gas, Electrics and the Bits That Bite

This is where the real money hides. Twenty five years of commercial gas work and fabrication says these four items account for most of the nasty surprises.

• Gas Safety Certificate: Ask for the current certificate and check the expiry date, not just that one exists. A mobile catering unit needs testing by a Gas Safe engineer registered for LPG mobile catering specifically. A domestic ticket does not cover it.
• Bottle locker and drop-out vents: The locker must be external, sealed from the interior and vented at the bottom. LPG is heavier than air. If there is no low-level drop-out vent, that unit should not be trading, and putting it right is not a five minute job.
• Gas interlock: If there is an extraction canopy over gas appliances, there should be an interlock stopping the gas when the fan is off. Plenty of older builds do not have one. Budget for it.
• Electrical certificate and the honest generator question: Get the current EIC or EICR. Then add up the kW draw of everything electric on board and compare it with the generator output. A 3kW generator and a 2.8kW fryer means you cannot run anything else. Sellers rarely lie about this. They just never worked it out.

Chassis, Weight and Whether You Can Legally Tow It

• Gross and unladen weight: Get both figures from the data plate, not from memory. Then check your driving licence. Anyone who passed after 1 January 1997 on a standard B licence has towing limits, and a loaded twin-axle trailer will exceed them more often than people expect.
• VIN and chassis number: Match the plate to the paperwork. A trailer with no traceable VIN is very hard to insure and very easy to have taken off you.
• Certificate of Conformity or IVA: Purpose-built trailers should have one. Home conversions and horsebox builds often do not, and that limits resale.
• Axles, brakes and hitch: Look at the tyres for age cracking, not just tread. Check the brake cable and the jockey wheel. These are cheap to fix and tell you how the unit was looked after.

Fit-Out, Hygiene and Whether It Can Actually Trade

• Hand wash basin and sink bowls: Environmental Health will want a dedicated hand wash basin with hot water, separate from the food prep sinks. Missing it means you cannot register.
• Water tanks: Check fresh and waste capacity in litres. A 50 litre fresh tank sounds fine until you run a busy Saturday and refill four times.
• Wall and floor finish: Stainless or hygienic cladding, sealed joints, coved edges. Bare ply behind a fryer is a fail.
• Extraction: Canopy, working fan, and filters that come out for cleaning. Ask when the ductwork was last cleaned. If they cannot answer, it has not been.

Viewing It Properly

Go in person, and go with the gas on and the power connected. A trailer standing cold in a yard tells you almost nothing.

Run every appliance. Fill the sink and check the hot water actually gets hot. Start the generator and put a real load on it. Open and close the hatch, work the canopy, check the door seals. Take photos of the data plates on every appliance while you are there, because you will want them later for parts and for resale.

If the seller will not let you fire it up, walk away. There is always another trailer.

• Current EIC or EICR and an RCD-protected consumer unit

• Gross and unladen weight from the data plate, checked against your licence
• VIN or chassis number matching the paperwork
• Hand wash basin with hot water, separate from prep sinks
• Fresh and waste water capacity in litres
• Extraction fan working and filters removable
• Every appliance run under load during the viewing
• Data plate photos taken for every appliance on board

A used catering trailer bought properly is one of the fastest routes into hospitality there is. Bought badly, it sits on a drive for a year while you find the money to make it legal.
